Fujitsu further boosts investment in data centres

Fujitsu’s investment in its Australian data centres continues apace, with announcement of a $12.2 million investment in its Western Sydney data centre.

The investment in upgrading the Western Sydney centre follows Fujitsu's signing of an agreement with Connect Infrastructure last month, marking the start of a six month project that will significantly increase the capacity of the site allowing for future expansion and growth.

Fujitsu’s investments in its data centres is part of the continuous improvement of its data centre capability with its Oceania Data Centre 2025 Roadmap announced in May.

The roadmap details the strategic direction for Fujitsu’s seven data centres across Australia and outlines how the company is to take advantage of rapidly evolving infrastructure technologies that maximise performance, reliability, data security and sustainability.

{loadposition peter}The Western Sydney data centre project is the second initiative from the Roadmap, following a $10 million upgrade of Fujitsu’s Malaga data centre in Perth to Tier IV certification announced in May.

The Fujitsu Western Sydney data centre project has two components – a $7 million power infrastructure upgrade and a $5.2 million upgrade of internal infrastructure capacity.

The data centre was commissioned in 2011 and secured a 4-star NABERS rating in December 2014, and the Fujitsu data centre footprint in Australia now comprises over 25,000 square metres of highly secure and fully redundant facilities in seven sites, including the Fujitsu WSDC.

Fujitsu says two 33kV high voltage feeders will be installed in the Western Sydney data centre, which will run in two separate underground routes approximately 3.5 km each from the Blacktown Endeavour Energy Transmission Station to the data centre and provide an additional 30MVA of power capacity to the site. Construction will commence in early August.

According to Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand CEO Mike Foster, the company is seeing an ever increasing demand from customers for enterprise-grade data centre facilities as they prepare for digital transformation and "the evolving data needs of a hyper connected world.”

“With our Data Centre Roadmap we have outlined a program of investment that will ensure that our capability stays ahead of our customers’ needs.

“The planning and design component of this project has been in place for approximately 12 months and we expect to see construction commencing shortly. The Project Team has had some interesting geographical challenges to address, including the need to underbore both the Great Western Highway and the M4 Motorway.”
